Southwest Regional NSF GK-12 Conference
College Station, Texas  --  November 9-10, 2007

Preparations for Participants

1. Program Presentation

Each GK-12 group should prepare a 7-minute presentation followed by a 2 minutes Q&A for the morning session that might cover:

  a. basic information about the structure and nature of their program;
  b. the program's "hook" or specific strategy: What is unique about your project that serves K-12 needs?
  c. what has worked best in their implementation of their objectives;
  d.

significant problems the program has faced and possible solutions.

  e. how your group might interface with local community colleges.

2. Fellows' (and Teachers') Posters and Poster Summaries

Each attending GK-12 Fellow is requested to prepare a poster to present at a lunchtime poster session.  Maximum poster dimensions are 40 x 60 inches.  Other attending participants are also welcome to present posters (teachers, managers) but only Fellows are expected to do so.  Posters need not be a report of findings regarding the overall effectiveness or impact of the program.  Ideas for poster subjects include:

  a. an involved activity or series of activities conducted in the Fellow's school;
  b. the program's solution to a specific problem faced in implementing the program;
  c. an unusual finding of the program's involvement in public schools that is not directly related to the primary research objective;
  d. any other interesting aspect of the program or interaction with K-12 students or teachers.
  e. GK-12 Fellow's research and how it might be used in a K-12 setting

3. Lesson Plan Packet  (Optional)

Each attending GK-12 group should create a packet of five outstanding lesson plans to share with the other groups.  These lesson plans should reflect original and polished activities that have been tested in the classroom.  Groups should bring 10 copies of their packet which will be distributed to other GK-12 groups during the Fellows and teachers' Birds of a Feather session.

4. Activity Presentation (Optional)

We have planned for four to eight STEM presentation stations of hands-on activities in four simultaneous sessions while non-presenting attendees from all groups rotate through the stations.  This activity could be manned by a set contingent from your attending group or you could rotate responsibility for this so that everyone from your group has the chance to experience some other activities.  If you would like to offer your Fellows this opportunity to present at a regional conference, let us know that you would like to reserve one of these slots, and let us know in which STEM area.  Slots will be allotted on a first-come, first-serve basis.  If you are interested in presenting more than one activity, let us know and we will put you on a waiting list for a second slot if there are fewer than eight groups interested in presenting.

 5. Fellow/Teacher Experiences in K-12 Classrooms  (Optional)

  A group of 4 - 6 fellow-teacher pairs from different GK-12 groups will participate in providing evidence of successful collaborations/golden nuggets in the K-12 classroom.  These will take about 5 minutes per team.
